According to Marketing Beverly Hills, Volvo has its eyes set on replacing keys with a smart phone application that Volvo owners may use to start their car.
The Swedish car producer has hopes of releasing their plans commercially by 2017. Volvo is hoping to introduce a smart phone application that can do so much more than simple keys could ever do. The app will allow customers to do common features like lock their cars and start their engines through a Bluetooth connection. Additionally, if customers owned multiple Volvo vehicles they can access them in different locations depending on where they are.
One benefit of not having to collect a physical key to drive a vehicle is easier sharing for single-car families or friends. You simply share the digital key with whomever you deem worthy, regardless of where you parked the car. This technology would make people’s lives easier and potentially save them a lot of time. Imagine dropping your car off at the train station for your spouse who is arriving later that night and not worrying about having to hand her the key.
Volvo’s keyless application features shows the customer:
- The number of shared keys active
- Whether the car is on or off
- If the vehicle is locked or unlocked
- The remaining range in miles or kilometers until the fuel tank is empty
Volvo’s innovative digital key technology has the potential to drastically change the way people access and start their cars.
Other companies have already presented the concept of a “keyless” car but none have taken initiative to truly make it a digital process. If the keyless technology is too much for you to fathom, don’t worry, Volvo announced it will provide a physical key to customers who request it. Enjoyed the article?
